League of Legends Patch 25.23 Brings Back Fan-Favorite Winter Rift Map After Eight-Year Hiatus

The latest major update, League of Legends Patch 25.23, has delivered more than just the new champion Zaahen and an Arcane anniversary event; it has reintroduced the highly anticipated Winter Rift map theme, a cherished seasonal reskin not seen in the game since 2017.

The return of the Winter Rift, a cosmetic change that drapes the Summoner’s Rift map in snow and festive decorations, has delighted long-time players. The theme had been sorely missed, despite the recent return of other seasonal maps like Butcher’s Bridge earlier this year.

Key Visual and Audio Changes

The 2025 iteration of the Winter Rift includes both nostalgic elements and significant new features:

• Map Environment: A thick dusting of snow covers the entire map, setting a festive scene.

• Nexus Decor: The Nexus structures are now surrounded by an adorable, rotating toy train carrying Poros, complete with small, endearing squeaks.

• Monster Costumes: Every jungle monster and neutral objective has received a unique holiday makeover. Shelly the Rift Herald, for instance, sports reindeer antlers and a red nose, while Atakhan has a Santa-style glow-up.

• The Baron’s Hat: The most celebrated change is the return of Baron Nashor’s Santa hat, which had been missing in recent years. The giant monster now wears the hat proudly, supplemented by warm gloves on its many limbs, green earmuffs on its smaller heads, and a matching scarf.

• New Music: The patch introduces a new, more somber and ambient musical theme for the Winter Rift, enhancing the seasonal atmosphere.

Patch Context and Other Updates

Patch 25.23 is substantial, also introducing new winter-themed skins like Winter Wonder Milio and Zeri, alongside Reindeer Smolder and Prestige Winterblessed Mel.

The update also includes major systemic changes, such as:
